New Habits Are Positive

Do you need to break up your routine or change things up a bit? If the answer is yes then I can highly recommend adopting a new habit. I say this because recently I have started to wake up at 5am every morning and it has become a bit of a revelation.

A revelation in terms of be able to see my life from a completely different perspective, has allowed me to totally restructure my day and recognize where I was picking up some bad habits. It has been something that I have wanted to do for a long time but have always put off.

With the approach of summer and early sunrises, I thought I would try it for week and then see. I am certainly glad that I did, for since then I have kept it up (for about three weeks now!), there have been a couple of ‘lie ins’ here and there but on the whole I have not looked back since.

Of course you don’t have to follow suit or do anything radical or dramatic here; just something different, to break those old habits and something that you can stick to. It could be learning a new skill daily, limiting the time you spend watching TV or social media or starting a journal.

Whatever it is, the main thing here is to add a little shock to the system and force you to think and act in a slightly different way. It is so easy for us at the moment to do the same things over and over, there is a lot of comfort in habits and routines. Often we are totally unaware we are doing certain things as they have become automatic.

It can be easier for negative habits to develop here, all be them relatively benign, however through repetition, over the weeks and months these can develop and their impact can become steadily worse and worse. We get focussed on tasks and can become rigidly tied to the way we complete them, often in the easiest or least effort involved way.

This can be bad and can leave our brains a bit lazy, prone to boredom or distraction. It is by far the quickest way to dig ourselves into a rut. Believe me, it is so easily done, I have certainly been guilty of it of late.

By adopting a new habit you force your brain to think differently, to carve out new neural pathways for itself and flick it out of the default automatic pilot setting. It’s about being more conscious, for me waking up so much earlier in the morning has allowed me to recognise when I am most productive during the day and just how much time, especially in the evenings I spend doing things on my phone.

It’s like my eyes have been opened and I am like ‘ok what is it that I either need or want to change?’ It is a really positive experience, though I now have to be aware that as we speak my brain is acclimatizing to the new habit, so chances are I will have to change things up in a few months with a another new habit, but that’s OK, the main thing here is that I have broken up the old routine.  I can highly recommend it even if it’s just for a short space of time, go on, give it a whirl!
